RECIPROCITY
The physical and visual internalization of the topograhy of te surrounding landscape with the open ground floor interior representing the external environment.
INSERTION
The outdoor cafe and garden initiate activity and reactivity between the existing urban context and the new inserted space. They are a place which connects the interior and exterior through the decision to open the outdoor cafe to face the Northern park, the oval and the street. This exposure allows the community to interact with the exterior environment.
THRESHOLD
Certain design elements have been introduced so as to diffuse the strict threshold between the inteiror and exterior of the 'Comunity Centre'. Firstly, the cafe opens up interaction between the interior functioning of the space and the outdoor environment.

Secondly, the curtain wall on the ground floor street side visually connects the interior and exterior.

INFRASTRUCTURE
The design proposition has altered the movement in and around the site. By curving the ground level curtain wall facing the West, visitors are led by columns into the building via the northern side (adjacent to the park - where the building is set back further than the Southern side). They are then able to walk up and through the outdoor cafe area which is open right to the oval. This design decision successfully integrates an external movement allowing visitors to appreciate the surrounding environment. Alternatively, the internal journey sees one enter through double glass doors from the Street side on the North, through the foyer and past the internal cafe, and finally through the symbolic arched gateway arriving at the oval.

MATERIALITY
The Copper sheeting and concrete block construction is reflective of the monumental and bold design for the Community Centre. Additionally the use of timber strip flooring and ceiling, and Engineered Glulam beams in the gym halls is an environmental decision which also serves to create a warm and confortable aesthetic.

FORM
The use of Sandstone in the Coogee area portraying heaviness is juxtoposed with the flowing water and open spaces/natural landscape. In the same way, the bold form of te building that may seem massive from the streetscape is in fact diminishing into the open spaces, blending into the surrounds.
The oval's curved edges and the curved threshold at Coogee beach, including the iconic coogee steps down onto te beach are part of a common organic form which is apparent in the Coogee natural landscape. This organic curve is brought out in the design proposition.
